Anand Patwardhan (India, 1994)
Artist in Person
(Pitra, Putra aur Dharamyuddha). Bombay, 1993: Following the
1992 destruction of the Babri Mosque (see In the Name of God,
October 21), the city has been rocked by bombings and ongoing sectarian
violence. But some residents declare that the looting and fires are “fun” and “God's
will.” This ambitious and disturbing documentary asks where such
notions come from. Part 1, “Trial by Fire,” depicts religious violence
in fiery images—incendiary Bombay, Sati (wife-burning), and rituals
of purification—as well as outlining the subjugation of women under
both Islam and Hinduism. Part 2, “Hero Pharmacy,” explores the cult
of masculinity. Surveying everything from a quack sex doctor's street-corner
spiel and billboards of massively muscled movie stars to the phallic
bow-and-arrow logo of the Hindu nationalist group Shiv Sena, Patwardhan
delivers a probing and often grimly hilarious take on Indian machismo. - Juliet
